What a great way to enjoy the great British country side and keep in trim. Dorset is located in the South West of England and holds many treasures that are well away from the tourists areas.

Treat yourself to an amazing array of colour by visiting North Dorset. The little village of Bourton which is situated just off the A303 London To Exeter road midway between Mere (Wiltshire) and Wincanton (Somerset) is an excellent starting point for your hiking adventure. Parking is easy and free. The village boosts of a Village pub (the White Lion) built in the 16th century and a village garage combined Post Office. What more could you want in a thriving village!

Almost opposite the Garage is a lane called milk factory lane which runs parallel to the River Stour which is mealy a small stream that runs quietly along. The backdrop one can see the sheep grazing and caring for their young.

Take the second turning on the left passing the old iron foundry where during world war one over 3 million bombs were produced. Now just a derelict old building which looks as if it was the casualty of the war. This lane is known as kites nest and soon you will pass Kites nest house on your left. A few steps that are located just past this house will lead you to an open field. Now you will be glad you have bought a good quality pair of walking boots to protect your feet. A walking pole is also an excellent accessory for such a hike.

A foot path crosses this field just continue as it is well sign posted. To your left you will have a magnificent view of the Blackmore Vale and beyond. You will look down on the Village Church and observe the unhurried life of rural England. Fresh is the air that you breathe while you continue.

Soon you will reach a wooded area that occasionally you will see fox cubs playing oblivious to the human stress. As you emerge from this wooded area you will see a tremendous array of brilliant colour on your left of trees in blossom or flower. You may be forgiven for thinking you have reached paradise. At the end of this field turn left and you will arrive at Chafymoor House. Continue past this house until you reach the old A303. Turn left into the village and continue until you reach the White Lion Pub where a cool drink during awaits. You can enjoy this walk at any time of the year but it is essential to keep warm and dry.
